A childhood of conformity and creativity
Born in the heart of communist Romania, Omis grew up in a world where individuality was suppressed, and conformity was the law of the land. As a left-handed child in a regime that demanded uniformity, he faced the harsh reality of having to hide a part of himself. In school, his left hand was tied behind his back, forcing him to write and draw with his right hand. But even in this forced conformity, his creative spirit found ways to flourish, quietly resisting the limitations placed upon him. His art became his voice in a world that sought to silence differences.
Art in the army: Bringing laughter to dark times
In his teenage years, like many young men at the time, he was conscripted into the army. It was there, in the camaraderie of military life, that his artistic talent blossomed into something more personal. His ability to sketch playful caricatures became a gift to his fellow soldiers, a way to bring smiles and laughter during difficult times. His drawings, filled with humor and wit, became a source of joy, and soon, his comrades were asking him to tattoo those very characters as lasting memories of their shared moments.
Fighting for freedom: The 1989 Revolution
Then came the Romanian Revolution of 1989, a turning point not only for the country but for Omis as well. He stood on the front lines, fighting for the freedom of his homeland, and this monumental period left an indelible mark on both his life and his art. But even after the revolution, Romania's struggles were far from over, and with a young family to support, Omis made the difficult decision to travel abroad, seeking work in foreign countries.
A journey abroad: Sketching life in foreign lands
During these long trips away from home, his art became a way to connect with the world around him. In bustling cities and quiet moments, he would capture the scenes and experiences that colored his journey. His caricatures playful, insightful, and full of life entertained those he met, offering a glimpse into the vibrant spirit that had carried him through the darkest times.
A new beginning: Life and inspiration in Amsterdam
Realising the toll that these trips were taking on his family, he made a life-changing decision: to relocate his entire family to the Netherlands. It was here, in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, that Omis found new inspiration. His children thrived in their new environment, and his art continued to evolve, now capturing the spirit and energy of this new chapter in their lives.
A story through art: Resilience and expression
This collection of works is a reflection of his journey from the restrictions of his youth to the freedom of expression he has found in his art. Each piece tells a story of resilience, humor, and the beauty of life, seen through the eyes of someone who has lived through struggle but never lost his creative spark. Through his art, Omis continues to share the moments, memories, and emotions that have shaped him, offering a glimpse into the world as only he can see it.
