Living under the weight of conformity
Growing up in communist Romania, life was rigid, and the pressure to conform weighed heavily on everyone. Individuality was often suppressed, and self-expression could carry serious consequences. From the start, I stood out in a system that demanded uniformity. I was born left-handed. In school, this difference wasn't welcomed. My teachers forced me to write with my right hand, even tying my left hand behind my back. It was frustrating, and deeply unfair, but there was something in me that refused to be silenced.
A secret rebellion through art
Art became my quiet rebellion, a hidden yet powerful act of defiance. When no one was watching, I practiced drawing with both hands. My left hand sketched with freedom, while my right struggled under the constraints of forced conformity. In those moments, my mind moved between two worlds, one of restriction, the other of liberation. Art became my refuge, a space where I could express everything I was forbidden to say aloud. The more they tried to suppress my individuality, the more determined I became to make my voice heard through my drawings.
Risking it all. Caricatures of communist leaders
As my confidence grew, I ventured into riskier territory, sketching caricatures of communist leaders. These were not just innocent doodles. They were bold, exaggerated representations that mocked the very figures enforcing the system’s oppressive rules. Drawing these characters carried great personal risk, but I couldn’t resist the urge to express the absurdity of their authority. Each caricature was a small act of rebellion, a truth captured in ink that words alone could not express. It was as if my art whispered the unspoken frustrations of many.
A secret world of music and hope
As a teenager, I found solace in music alongside a group of friends who also yearned for more than the grey, controlled world we lived in. We gathered in secret, listening to forbidden radio stations that played rock 'n' roll, jazz, and the rebellious sounds of freedom from beyond the Iron Curtain. The crackling airwaves were our link to a different reality. At times, the ominous sound of police boots outside would force us to turn the volume down and pretend to be asleep. Yet, the moment they passed, we turned the music back up, and with it, our hopes for something better.
Caricatures and creativity in the army
During my time in the army, I continued using caricature as a way to inject humor into difficult times. What began as playful sketches to entertain my comrades soon evolved into meaningful tattoos, capturing the camaraderie and shared moments of joy during challenging periods. The Romanian Revolution of 1989 left a profound mark on me, deepening my resolve to fight for freedom, both for my country and within myself.
Sketching the world through new eyes
Art remained my loyal companion as I traveled the world, seeking opportunities to support my family. Everywhere I went, I sketched the beauty and stories of the people and places I encountered. Each drawing offered a glimpse into the vibrant world I was experiencing, providing a contrast to the restrictions of my past.
A new chapter in Amsterdam
Now, based in Amsterdam, I find myself surrounded by new inspiration. My art has evolved, but it remains deeply rooted in the resilience, humor, and life experiences that have shaped me. Each piece I create tells a story, whether drawn from my childhood under oppression or from the new life I’ve built in freedom. Through my art, I invite you to join me on this journey and explore the beauty that can emerge from even the darkest circumstances.
